the equitable solution
[the] problem
seeking a more equitable bathroom experience for all
When most people encounter an out of order bathroom, it’s an inconvenience. Unfortunately, for some people with disabilities it’s more than an inconvenience as even ADA compliant bathrooms are closed off to them when there is no adult changing table available. For many, their bathroom needs can be met only through a place where they can lay down and have a diaper changed. Seeing the need for a solution that allows people with disabilities to live with dignity in public spaces, we created the [equi]table.
We felt this new take was necessary because, although many changing tables existed for purchase, they simply were too big and bulky for most ADA compliant public bathrooms. Whereas designers of existing products have implicitly said: “Here’s a nice adult changing table. Now, design a bathroom around it,” we take the opposite approach and have designed our table around the public bathroom.

We are a group of senior mechanical engineering students at Columbia University!
Estevan Mesa
Estevan was born and raised in El Paso, Texas before moving to NYC in 2018. Upon receiving his BS in Mechanical Engineering from Columbia this Spring, he will be working as a Propulsion Design Engineer in the Seattle area.
Tzipora Hirsch
Tzipora is a Queens born senior at Columbia University studying Mechanical Engineering. She also holds a bachelors degree from Queens College in Applied Mathematics. After she graduates, Tzipora will be a Tech Consultant in New York.
David D'Ambrisi
Hailing from Milwaukee, David is a senior at Columbia University studying Mechanical Engineering. He holds a BSBA from Georgetown's McDonough School of Business in Operations and Information Management. In June, he will become a Data Scientist.
McKenna Gillard
McKenna is from Richmond, Virginia but has been calling the Columbia Campus home for the last 4 years. After graduating from BS in mechanical engineering and a minor in computer science, she will continue working in engineering and design in Seattle.
Special thanks go to the mechanical engineering department, Professor Y, the machine shop staff, and fellow mechanical engineering seniors at at Columbia University for their help and support!
